CUMURUXATIBA Cumuruxatiba, in the language of the Pataxó Indians, refers to the enormous variation of the tides, and is located at the extrem south of Bahia, in the municipality of Prado, 32km by well maintained dirt road from the village. From the beginning Cumuruxatiba was a tiny fishing village, but with the discovery of monasitic blacksand in the 60's, the village became more nidely known. The beaches face shallow waters with soft waves due to the protection of the surrounding reefs. Large Amendoeira trees offer shade and several small rivers give the visitor a chance to cool off in fresh water after long walks on nearly deserted beaches, leaving one with a total sense of piece and calm. Due to the ever changing tides, the colours of the sea vary from green to blue to turquoise and invite the visitor to cross large expanses of sand to reach the outer reef. To experience a walk on these sandy beaches on a night with a full moon is a moment never to be forgotten. There are other beautiful beaches to be explored situated a little further away such as Japara, Ponta do Moreira, Imbassuaba, Calambrião and Barra do Cahy, where the Portuguese navigators first encountered the indigenous population of Brasil. The area is bordered by the Maritime Reserve of Corumbao, the National Park of Monte Pascoal, also the National Park of Discovery, some of the last tracts of Atlantic Forest to be found, and further afield the Marine Park of Abrolhos.. TRIPS • Whale Watching • Ponta do Corumbau • Various options |
